Background

Wigglytuff grew up in a little house on a little prairie with his parents, a pair of Wigglytuffs. Back then, he was still Igglybuff and he had three friends: Wooper, Smoochum, and Budew. Just about every day he went out to play with them and was happy.

At some point that isn't fully specified he had gone with his dad someplace that had taken them along a mountain pass. But a storm kicked up while they were returning home and Igglybuff had been afraid. His dad had come to comfort him but a rockslide triggered and it was Igglybuff who saved his life by blasting the rock that was about to crush him with a mysterious power.

Life continued as usual, with the addition of Igglybuff befriending two bullies, Banette and Skorupi. Always the friendly type, he had accidentally allowed them to eat all of the Gummis his mom bought for him to share with his friends, but without being afraid of them and believing they were his friends. After that day, the two began to hang out around them more and tried to get them all to play explorers in Murky Forest, where they were forbidden to go because of rumors of a monster lurking there. Budew, Wooper, and Smoochum refused to play and left, but both because he wasn't afraid and didn't know what an exploration team was, Igglybuff stayed and went with the bullies.

Deep in the forest they encountered the monster, an Armaldo, and Banette and Skorupi ran away. Igglybuff wasn't intimidated though and simply pestered Armaldo about why he was out there, promising to go home after he'd had the question answered. Armaldo took him to the cave where he lived and told him that he was an explorer but was somewhat retired from actually exploring. He showed Igglybuff a map that he had found and was trying to decipher. While listening to him talk about how exciting exploration was, Igglybuff noticed how thick the map was. Deciding that it must be layered, he set fire to it so get the extra layer off, and once its secret was revealed encouraged Armaldo to go to the place on the map. He also asked him to take him along.

The next day they set off exploring together and they found an extremely rare item called a Defend Globe. Even though Igglybuff had no idea about the value of the item, he was happy for their success and had really enjoyed the journey. Feeling as though something had changed about himself, he asked Armaldo to teach him about exploring, calling him Master and even kneeling in his sincerity.

For a long time afterward, Igglybuff's only focus was exploring, and every day he would go to Armaldo's shelter for a new adventure with no thought to his friends beyond apologizing for having other plans. He found lots of treasure with Armaldo and had lots of fun through it all. Then things changed when they went to Fortune Ravine.

After another successful exploration, they were about to head to some ruins in the distance when Igglybuff's friends and family came running up with a Nidoking and Officer Magnazone and his two deputies. His friends were worried and tried to convince him that Armaldo was a bad guy, and then Nidoking and Officer Magnazone demanded that Armaldo surrender. They put him under arrest, saying all kinds of mean things about him for involving a kid in his trouble, despite Igglybuff's insistence that it wasn't true. He tried to tell them Armaldo was good and that he'd asked to be with him, but no one was listening.

Becoming desperate and upset, Igglybuff started to gather his energy to blast Officer Magnazone and Nidoking, but Armaldo told him not to. He asked for a moment to talk to Igglybuff, saying he didn't want him to become a criminal like him and apologizing for not telling him the truth sooner. He explained everything from how he ended up in the forest to the fact he knew exploring with Igglybuff was a risk that might have gotten him captured, pointing out that it was time for him to answer for his past crimes. He expressed the wish to explore with Igglybuff again someday after that and gave him the Defend Globe from their first adventure before allowing himself to be taken away and leaving Igglybuff heartbroken.

Not much is know about what happened after this, but Igglybuff has been keeping the Defend Globe close because he treasures it. He's still an explorer and eventually he evolved at the place where Pokemon go to do so, possibly twice in a row since he made a name for himself as the exploration prodigy, Wigglytuff, at a fairly young age, He apparently kept in touch with and possibly sometimes explored with Armaldo as well.

Sometime after he'd made his name, Wigglytuff went walking out in the jungle far from home. While he was walking, someone stole his food and he couldn't get it back before collapsing from hunger. Fortunately and exploration team happened by and upon figuring out the problem they gave him a Perfect Apple to revive him. Upon hearing that Perfect Apples were his favorite they gave him another.

This trio, Team Charm, were looking for a mysterious treasure that teams from all over were searching for. But Wigglytuff knew nothing about it and so they all said goodbye and he continued his walk. He dropped the second Perfect Apple though, and in chasing it down he found himself deep in the dungeon that Team Charm was exploring and actually ran into them again. At first they were suspicious he was after the treasure, but he still knew nothing about it, so instead they asked his help in the puzzle that had stumped them. He thought on the situation and came up with an answer, but didn't find the answer until he dropped his Apple again and it flew through a seemingly solid wall. In a panic he rushed after it and left his new friends behind.

The next time Wigglytuff appeared, it was just in time to keep Team Charm and the team of thieves, Team AWD, from knocking each other out. He revealed that they had been tricked into fighting each other by the area's boss, theorizing that the boss was protecting the treasure. Approaching the treasure chest that was the source of the fighting, he asked if it was true. After a moment the chest revealed itself to be Ditto, who was protector of a Time Gear located deeper in the caves. He apologized for the trouble and allowed them to see the Time Gear.

Afterwards, Wigglytuff was ready to say goodbye to Team Charm and go home, but they had gained respect towards him and wanted to travel together, bribing him with the promise of another Perfect Apple when he was unsure. For awhile he was an unofficial member of Team Charm, and became the keeper of a mysterious key they found on one adventure shortly before going their separate ways finally.

Personality and Abilities

Wigglytuff is, and always has been, a Pokemon that most other Pokemon can't for the life of them figure out. He comes across as outgoing, childish, friendly, kindhearted, and seems to have nothing more on his mind than friends and Perfect Apples and fun. He's carefree and naive, and because of it is often easily underestimated by those who don't know him well. And by the start of the canon in which he is a prominent NPC, some even find his demeanor creepy while most are terrified of his notorious temper. But he still keeps a lot of friends and many respect and like him as much as they fear him. He's also actually very intelligent and perceptive. And not much changes from his childhood through the events of the game.

A happy-go-lucky attitude is the most noticeable trait Wigglytuff has. Enjoying every day with his friends, sharing and helping out when needed, and just having fun doing what he loves is how he operates above all else. He stays cheerful very easily whether dealing with familiar or new faces, embracing others as friends first and preferring to resolve things peacefully when possible. As a result, he isn't often the aggressor and not antagonistic in nature. This combined with his kindness and the fact that he isn't easily intimidated can lead to his being fooled or taken advantage of, but he's generally capable of handling himself and holds no grudges. Even knowing someone is a criminal or bad person doesn't automatically mean he is anything less than nice at the start without them genuinely doing wrong that he needs to stop. This comes largely from his belief that truly evil Pokemon don't exist anywhere, despite there being plenty of outlaws that must be captured and brought to justice.

As kind as he is cheerful, Wigglytuff tries to be conscious of the happiness of others and encourage them to do their best. This is especially true when he becomes master of his own exploration guild, in which he loves to see his apprentices trying hard and encourages them to try despite any failures that may happen. He wants others to succeed in their dreams and have fun, and knows that no one succeeds all the time so he also tries to push the idea that failure is nothing to be ashamed of.

As inattentive as he may seem, usually off in his own little world, falling asleep during important conversations, or even just not appearing to listen, he is very good at problem-solving and fairly intuitive. He can come to conclusions fairly quickly, given a moment to study or consider a problem, and they're often right on track even before he gets confirmation about being right.

There isn't much that can make Wigglytuff genuinely sad, but the most obvious is not having access to his favorite food: Perfect Apples. Aside from that, the loss of people close to him, or them having been hurt because he couldn't protect them is a major source of sadness as well. The latter examples will linger, even though he won't show it in any situation not immediately relevant to the source of sadness.

As a little bit of a big kid, Wigglytuff does have moments where he may seem selfish and definitely immature. He won't get mad because someone failed to get him more Perfect Apples, but he will cry if there aren't anymore. He'll do the unselfish thing and give someone the chance for glory, but then decide to go too if Perfect Apples may be gained. He would occasionally shirk his duties to go look for Perfect Apples if someone wasn't there to make him stay put. He'll randomly just sing happily while dancing with a Perfect Apple on his head. He'll raid the storage for Perfect Apples if one isn't brought to him before bed. He might lose his temper if his friends can't be cheerful and are kind of rude about it. And no matter how attached he is to someone, he may be a difficult child toward them if he thinks they've become too overbearing or boring.

Wigglytuff's more child-like nature has some very good points too though. He will bend rules for friends who are trying hard because they are, or disregard and entire selection process because it's more fun to do a thing if everyone is included. When the main characters graduate, he sends them on a mission appropriate for graduation that involves beating the Grand Master of all things bad and his minions (being himself and the apprentices) and retrieving a treasure (a Perfect Apple that he places in a treasure box beforehand) and gets the whole guild in on the act to make it special for them.

The more mature side of Wigglytuff is the one that knows when secrets must be kept and is protective of his friends. In his youth, Wigglytuff found a Time Gear and kept it a secret so it wouldn't be disturbed and another in the main storyline of the game that he blatantly told lies that made it seem like his guild had failed, just to keep it safe. He's also willing to go out alone for answers and to make things go smoothly in serious situations, such as when he went to a dangerous cave ahead of his guild to meet his old friend, Lapras, and explain that the crisis in the world meant he could no longer keep his promise of secrecy to Lapras.

Wigglytuff is also a protector of those he holds close. He went after Bidoof with Chatot and the guild, and they saved him from outlaws, all because Bidoof was acting strangely and it was a cause for concern. He also well as tryied to protect Chatot from harm in revisiting a cave where Chatot was knocked out protecting him, despite most of the game showing no such concern for his invaluable partner. It may also be the reason he was revealed to have gone to the cave he would later send the protagonists to as their first real exploration, he wanted to be sure they wouldn't find too much trouble. But despite his protectiveness, Wigglytuff knows that sometimes he just has to step back and let someone succeed on their own. This was seen in his letting Bidoof continue to explore Star Cave on his own without any further help from the guild, and in accepting when he couldn't help the protagonists save the world because only they could.

At the end of the day, Wigglytuff may seem to be an odd man-child who is much too cheerful for his own good, but his heart is in the right place and he's only ever being himself.

Abilities
For the most part, Wigglytuff is the same as any other Wigglytuff. He has the same move potentials and from Igglybuff to his current state he's learned what comes from both forms, though he may have pretty much skipped the Jigglypuff stage. He is a Normal-type Pokemon, giving him a fair range of flexibility, with no weaknesses except against Fighting-types and no low damage output except against Rock, Steel, and Ghost-types. His special ability, Cute Charm, may cause opponents of the opposite gender to temporarily become infatuated should they land a physical hit on him.

Where he differs is in the fact that he is very powerful, making him a much tougher opponent than he seems. This has been shown in the fact that he can shrug off powerful sneak attacks and knock his attackers before they know what happened, as well as the fact that he spent quite some time exploring dungeons completely unassisted. He also has a hidden destructive power that he has learned to harness at will and can focus enough to destroy a room without hurting the residents or blast living targets without destroying their immediate environment. Often when preparing to unleash it the area he's is will shake as though there's a small earthquake. It was theorized by his father that this power is full of his kindness for others.

Being most likely close to around level 30 (50 by the time the main game starts), his known moves are: Charm, Pound, Sweet Kiss, and Copycat as Igglybuff, and Sing, Doubleslap, Defense Curl, and Disable as Wigglytuff. It's unknown if he learned anything in the Jigglypuff stage at all, and he can't naturally learn anything new now that he is a Wigglytuff and must rely on TMs for that. It's also implied that he also knows Hyper Voice though. As Mystery Dungeon works differently than the main series, he has almost unrestricted access to all naturally learned moves though and can change them up pretty much whenever if he wants.

Mystery Dungeon also has a feature circulating around IQ, in which Pokemon fall under a certain group and learn certain skills based on their own IQ as well as that group. Some of these are noteworthy because they have effects that affect not only the Pokemon in question. Wigglytuff had to reach an IQ level of 200 in order to evolve from Igglybuff to Jigglypuff and is in the B Group, so he has at least a fair percentage of his just from that if not all of them by now. The most noteworthy are: Cheerleader (boosts the offensive power of nearby allies), Bodyguard (automatically takes the damage for nearby allies who are badly wounded), Nontraitor (doesn't affect allies with moves or attacks while confused or otherwise affected by statuses that would hinder his ability to fight correctly), Nonsleeper (can't be affected by anything that would cause any sleep-related statuses), Gap Prober (can attack or throw items at an opponent even when an ally is in the way without hurting said ally), Wise Healer (boosts the power of restorative items and moves), and Deep Breather (allows him to restore energy to one ability periodically).
